As soon as morning broke, Ahin threw me at the maid and left.
The maid, calling me “Miss Rabbit” just like Everine, introduced herself as Meimi.
She had short red hair and large eyes that gave a refreshing look, but she was so reticent that I could hardly get any information from her.
Even when taking a bath or handing out snacks, she did her work silently, without a word.
Moreover, there was a strange distance between Meimi and me. I found her presence oppressive.
The beasts were at least a head taller than any rabbit humanoid I had seen before, and even the maid’s sharp fangs gleamed dangerously. It was clear that a bite from her could be fatal.
‘…What in the world is that black panther?’
When I first stepped out of the bedroom with Meimi, I was speechless.
The bedroom was luxurious, but the corridor that unfolded was a spectacle I had never even imagined.
Marble walls and obviously expensive ornaments, and the ceiling was so high it made your eyes pop.
Seeing Ahin’s peculiar temper, I thought he might be some kind of eccentric rich man, but this kind of mansion suggested that he must be at least nobility in black panther territory. At a glance, it was worth twice as much as the Rabian mansion.
Moreover, Meimi’s remark, “I have been instructed by the young master to serve Miss Rabbit,” indicated that Ahin occupied the position of a young master in this mansion.
That meant he was a scion of the family head. The more I learned, the more astonishing things seemed.
I wished Meimi would chat a bit more, but sadly, she only spoke when necessary.
And now, as I hesitated upon seeing the main gate during a walk in the garden.
It was a cage big enough for a young rabbit to escape through.
Inside, a conflict arose between the desire to escape and the hypothesis that it might not be safe to stay here.
‘Then cry some more.’
‘I’ll catch you to eat the day after tomorrow, so try your best.’
As Ahin’s chilling smile flashed through my mind, my head went blank. I alternately looked at the main gate’s iron bars and the knights, and then I slightly lifted my head.
Just then, Meimi was conversing with a knight who seemed to hold a high rank.
‘Will such a good opportunity come again?’
It was unlikely. The bedroom had no holes to escape from, and without someone opening the door, leaving the room was impossible.
Just jumping off the bed was a challenge already.
“Then, take care.”
As the conversation seemed to conclude, I, growing anxious, quickly turned towards the main gate. Attempting to escape was better than doing nothing and just sitting on the dining table.
‘Move, move!’
I dashed past the surrounding servants with forceful strides.
Suddenly, with the speed that could make fur fly, a dagger flew in front of me and embedded itself in the ground.
‘Ah!’
I nearly crashed into the blade but instead slipped and rolled across the grass.
‘The dagger… the dagger… where from?’
The sharpened blade glistened as it caught the sunlight.
As I lay frozen on the ground, someone gently picked me up. It was none other than Meimi.
“Miss Rabbit, it’s dangerous outside the mansion.”
I kept gaping back and forth between the embedded dagger and her.
What about danger? What’s with that dagger? Why does a maid even have such swordsmanship skills?
Shocked, I was carried back to the mansion in Meimi’s arms.
Strange, this place is really strange.
